Fall Trend: Clunky Skyscraper Heels

August 10, 2010

Seen on the runway as part of the Fall 2010 Balenciaga collection, these shoes involve so much more than the normal leather.

“Plastic aquamarine, mahogany crocodile, stacks of colorful marbley prints, orthopedic looking platform attachment & foam pads…its a shoe of the future! Beautiful.” (Via the eloquent Jane Aldrige)

There is a lot going on here. You’ve got your basic matronly shoe, but the ante is upped with the additional elements.

hell, I might even consider wearing these.  I love the turquoise (still a big color into the fall, obviously!

Think this is just a single designer’s misstep? Oh, Pierre Hardy can do no wrong lately, and his efforts for Balenciaga are no exception.

Gucci is in.

Really in.

So is Miu Miu (but they’ve been in it for a while)

Prada’s throwing their hat shoe in the ring…

…times two.

And don’t forget Ralph Lauren.

The jury’s still out on my opinion (and on Blago‘s future!). I DO admire the sheer drama in these shoes, but can I get over the clunkiness factor? Also, when these masterpieces are replicated by  less expensive shoe companies, will they be ruined? Is the only thing holding these shoes upright the cost and quality of materials? What do you think? Are you on board the fall-skyscraper-clunker trend?

Oh I’m so glad you posted these. I think I like them but….the jury is still out. I’m just not sure. And yes, I think they might be ruined by a cheaper version.

Ok, so I took photos of my closed toe pumps and boots. Sending them, yes?
Opened toe pumps/sandals, ballet flats, and flat sandals still to be shot.
